Encryption
Scrolling text poem on 2 programmable LED signs
12” x 36” x 2”
2025

Two quotes and selected graphics are programmed onto these two LED signs. The quote on the larger sign is taken from the book, The Mother in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, by Elissa Marder, referencing the use of metaphors like wombs, tombs and crypts in Western literature and in psychoanalytic theory. In this installation that quote is paired with a smaller sign describing how encryption works within computer programming languages, encapsulating information. Each quote runs asynchronously and randomly lines up with the other to create multiple meanings for the reader, highlighting the apparent shared language and symbolic meanings that bridge these two entirely different subjects.
