The lonesome cut up
LED sign 8" x 48"
In collaboration with Clint Sleeper
2020

Borrowing a song writer's device known as "the cut-up technique", which takes apart lyrics from existing songs and reassembles their lyrical structures to inspire new works, we have re-worked the lyrics of the famous Country and Western song, “I'm so lonesome I could cry,” written in 1949 by Hank Williams. Reassembled through the use of a handwritten html code to algorithmically randomize the words, a new text is created, and was then programmed into the LED sign to play in a continuous loop.

The new configuration of phrases reference nature and heartbreak and asserts a critical comment on urban development and the loss of natural habitats in Middle Tennessee.
