About

Chalet Comellas is a new media artist working with text, electronics, video, and paint. Her works blend gestural abstraction with digital applications, reflecting philosophical ideas on the collective unconscious, mediation, and “human-in-the-loop” systems. Her interdisciplinary works are often exhibited as installations and evoke conversations about our current entanglement with algorithms, online platforms, and the ever-growing presence of artificial intelligence in our daily lives.
Comellas’ processes are connected to her fascination with the subconscious, memory, and Lacanian theories on dreams. She cites being profoundly inspired by the work of conceptual artist Susan Hiller, noting interest in her multidisciplinary works that “tap into cultural undercurrents using archetypal themes of transference,” often referencing sleep and dreaming as an evocative metaphor to reflect ideas on collective experience. Comellas' work intersects these ideas, by inserting the element of digital representation and acknowledging the effect of emerging technologies.
Comellas, born in Tampa, FL, lives and works in Nashville, TN. She has a research-based art practice and has taught digital foundations as well as lecture courses on contemporary art.
Her work has been presented nationally and internationally at numerous museums, academic institutions, and galleries with works placed in public and private collections. During her career Comellas has been the recipient of professional grants, awards, and artist residencies. In addition to studio work and teaching she has curated solo and group exhibitions at Unrequited Leisure Gallery.
