Movement in Place
Two-channel video installation
HD video, 16:9, 9m 56s
Audio, in collaboration with musician Mark Baker

This work was designed as a site-specific two-channel video projection created for InLight Richmond 2016, an annual juried light-based exhibition and festival held in Richmond, Virginia. Works each year are selected to respond to a particular site and highlight the history of that site. In this piece, historical, cultural, and architectural images of the Scott’s Addition neighborhood, spanning the late 1800s to present, shift, and layer, creating a dreamlike narrative. The central figure sweeps and clears sand in and out of the room, prompting the scenes to change. The audio and archival imagery are intended to evoke a sense of nostalgia, recounting the area’s storied past, from private lands to industrial zone, and most recently gentrifying into niche restaurants, condos, and breweries. Her persistent movements in place represents the way a community’s sense of place is forged from labor and production.

Movement in Place was selected to screen at Art Fields in 2018, taking top prize in the Digital Media Category.
