Exhibition Statement
Places have meaning, places have value, and places
carry with them the influence of history. The term place
has the unique capacity to be both explicit and abstract
in its definition, so artwork about place possesses the
ability to represent a spectrum of physical, cultural, or
emotional qualities that relate to a geographic location.
By Virtue of Place brings together a diverse group
of artists who share a common experience and
geography. An important thread that connects each of these artists is that they live, work, and maintain a studio practice in Florida.
Adopting a range of approaches and mediums, the works assembled for this exhibition seek to draw attention to the way each artist has developed a unique perspective on what it means to be part of the Florida landscape.
