STATEMENT

In video, sound, installation, and print Florida-born artist Chalet Comellas-Baker creates multidisciplinary projects that interrogate memory, environment, and place. She draws inspiration from her Spanish, Cuban, and American roots, and references Latin American diasporic histories, through her personal lens of assimilation. Her work employs cultural imaginaries such as food, music, dance, and poetry and questions the ways in which community is performed and how these performances intersect with the construction of identity.

BIO

Chalet Comellas-Baker holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Florida State University and a BFA from The University of Tampa, with a concentration in painting. She has been involved with arts education in a variety of settings, teaching elementary and secondary art at both public and private institutions, teaching college level studio arts classes, and as an Assistant Professor, in the Department of Art at Florida State University where she developed and taught critical writing courses on contemporary art and the environment.

Both as an independent artist and a collaborator, her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in museums, galleries, and festivals, including the Albany Museum of Art, Albany, GA; Boca Raton Museum of Art, FL; Goodyear Arts, Charlotte, NC; Shoebox Projects, Los Angeles, CA; Phylogeny Contemporary, Seattle, WA; Toronto Art Book Fair, Toronto; Tempus Projects, Tampa, FL; EYEDRUM Atlanta, GA; Flashpoint Gallery, Washington D.C.; Grace Exhibition Space, Brooklyn, NY; Blue Acier Gallery, Tampa, FL; Fountain Art Fair, Miami, FL; InLight, Richmond, VA; ArtFields 2018, Lake City, SC; and Acadiana Center for the Arts, Lafayette, LA a host for P.S. Satellites: A Project of Prospect 4 New Orleans.

She has participated in several residencies and received notable awards including: Visiting Artist in Residence at Vanderbilt University, Faculty in Residence at the Facility for Arts Research at Florida State University, and along with her musical collaborator, was awarded the top prize in digital media at ArtFields 2018.

Comellas-Baker’s installations have appeared in monographs, catalogues and journals including; Playing with Sketches, by Rockport Press, Making Now: Open for Exchange, by Florida State University Press and Tipping Point, Vol. 32/33 of the Mid America Print Council Journal. Her work is held in several library special collections including, Colorado College and Vanderbilt University.

Currently, she complements her studio work with a curatorial practice at Unrequited Leisure, an artist-run gallery in Nashville, TN, that she founded with artist Clint Sleeper focusing on video and net based art. The gallery’s pedagogical approach strives to pull together a diverse range of artists from the region and beyond, and thematically presents work that highlights both critical and topical investigations. Notable exhibitions, such as Josephine Lee: Practice until you feel the language inside of you, Also Tubes, and ILSSA Frameworks, have been reviewed in BURNAWAY and Number Inc. Magazine.
