Chalet Comellas (she/her)
Born, Tampa, Florida
Lives and works in Nashville, TN

Chalet Comellas is an interdisciplinary expanded media artist living and working in Nashville, TN. Through painting, sculpture, video, sound, and site-specific projects, Comellas explores relationships between concept and material, referencing indexical frameworks and archives that evoke memory, movement, identity, and time. Her creative research is rooted in intersectional feminism which she uses as a lens to view intergenerational dynamics, interrogating complex histories related to the Latin Diaspora.

Comellas received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Florida State University in 2012, and her BFA from The University of Tampa in 2001. Selected group exhibitions include the Terrain Biennial 2021, Chicago, IL; MOCAN, Nashville, TN; Laundromat Art Space, Miami, FL; InLight Richmond, Richmond, VA; Tempus Projects, Tampa, FL; LABSpace, Hillsdale, NY; Goodyear Arts, Charlotte, NC; EYEDRUM, Atlanta, GA; Flashpoint Gallery, Washington D.C.; Grace Exhibition Space, Brooklyn, NY; Shoebox Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; and Fountain Art Fair, Miami, FL; among others. Her experimental films have been screened in several festivals including the Miami New Media Festival, which traveled to Centro Cultural UCAB, Caracas, Venezuela; Museo Archaelogico di Olbia, Cerdeña, Italy; Cas di Cultura, Oranjestad, Aruba; puntWG, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

She has participated in several residencies and received notable awards, including: Visiting Artist in Residence at Vanderbilt University, Faculty in Residence at the Facility for Arts Research at Florida State University, and along with her musical collaborator, was awarded the top prize in digital media at ArtFields 2018.

As an Assistant Professor, she has taught lecture and studio arts classes on composition, time-based media, and developed critical writing classes on contemporary art and the environment. Her nomadic collaborative project, Assembly is Required was exhibited in Louisiana, as part of P.S. Satellites: A Project of Prospect 4 New Orleans. Printed materials from this project have been included in several regional group exhibitions and were shown internationally at the Toronto Art Book Fair.

Comellas' work and exhibitions have appeared in magazines, books, catalogues, and journals, including: TIME Magazine, Playing with Sketches (Rockport Press), Making Now: Open for Exchange (Florida State University Press), and Tipping Point, Vol. 32/33 of the Mid America Print Council Journal. Her work is held in several library special collections, including Vanderbilt University and Colorado College.

She has worked with several collaborators over the years and was a founding member of the artist collective Analog Analogue and in 2013, she gave a public talk on their collective works for TEDxFSU.

Since 2018, Comellas has curated exhibitions and organized programming at Unrequited Leisure, a gallery in Nashville, TN, that she founded with artist Clint Sleeper, focusing on video, expanded media, and net-based art. The gallery’s pedagogical approach strives to pull together a diverse range of artists from the region and beyond, and thematically present works that highlight both critical and topical investigations.
