So strangely far
The poem All May Come, by Cuban poet Fina Garcia Marruz, was the jumping off point for this experimental video. It is embedded with images of Ybor City, FL, my hometown, paired with footage from Barcelona, my grandmother’s hometown, collected when traveling in Spain. During my visit, protests erupted in Barcelona in reaction to the Catalonian separatist movement and the impending secession vote. For me, putting the two places together in one viewable space, coupled with Marruz’s verses on being welcomed in as a weary traveler coming “face to face with a mirror and doesn’t see himself,” generates the affect of being between two things, in an intermediate state, both within and away from a place that is neither here nor there.
